UK Data Disappoints (Why the pound is crashing)
In the UK, there was a slew of data released but none of it was terribly GBP supportive. First off, the Nationwide HPI, which highlights house price changes on a monthly basis, dropped 0.2% versus expectations of a 0.3% rise. Second, the construction PMI underperformed, coming in at 53.3 from last month’s 56.4 and less than the expected 55.6. Finally, net lending to individuals was calculated at 0.5B on the month, which is much less than the 1.7B expected and last. Obviously the UK economy is sputtering and as such, the currency has underperformed the EUR today due to the divergence in news reports. That being said, the risk environment and correlation to Europe have actually helped the pound to gain against the US dollar.
